What is Ventolin?

Ventolin is a branded medication used to help manage asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) symptoms. Ventolin inhalers contain the active ingredient salbutamol. Salbutamol works by relaxing the airways so it feels easier to breathe. Ventolin (salbutamol) is a common treatment for asthma, it’s colloquially referred to as the ‘blue inhaler.’

Ventolin is the commercial name for a drug called salbutamol. This usually comes in a blue inhaler (ventolin inhaler 100 micrograms) but it can also be given through a nebuliser (machine to give medication in a mist using a mouthpiece) in severe cases.

This medication is used to treat symptoms of asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). If you have those conditions, Ventolin (salbutamol) can help make it easier to breathe by relaxing your muscles of the airways to your lungs. You usually take this medication through an inhaler so it can reach your lungs quickly and directly to relieve your symptoms.

Who can use a Ventolin Inhaler?

According to the NHS website, Ventolin (salbutamol) inhalers are suitable for most adults and children. A ventolin inhaler is usually prescribed for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and/or asthma. Using it can help relieve symptoms such as wheeze and breathlessness. It is advised that children use a Ventolin inhaler with advice and monitoring from a doctor.

While ventolin 100 mcg is generally safe and effective, it may not be the right treatment for some people. People that experience any serious side effects (e.g abnormal heartbeat, fainting) or an allergic reaction (e.g swelling/tight throat, struggling to breathe, skin turning blue/pale, unresponsive) should stop using the Ventolin inhaler and seek medication attention.

How often should I be using my inhaler?

Ventolin is a type of “reliever inhaler”, so you only use it when you need it. For example, you might use it when you experience breathing problems such as coughing, chest tightness or before sport, exposure to pets or something else that might make you feel out of breath (e.g exercise, exposure to pets). The inhaler ventolin price is £9.95 for one.

Ventolin (salbutamol) 100mcg inhalers are usually used in the following way:

  • By taking one or two puffs of your Ventolin inhaler when you feel like you need it. For example, if you are wheezing, coughing, or breathless.
  • You should not exceed more than 4 puffs in a 24 hour period (unless you are having a severe asthma attack.)

If you find that you need your inhaler more than four times a day, it might mean:

  • You need different treatment such as a “preventer inhaler” because your condition is worsening or is not well controlled on the current treatment.
  • You might be more likely to get side effects such as increased tremors, heart rate, and headaches.

For whom Ventolin is suitable?

The ventolin inhaler 100 mcg can be used by both children and adults who experience conditions like asthma or COPD. Pregnant or breastfeeding women can also use Ventolin. It can help reduce symptoms of those conditions such as cough, wheeze, or breathlessness.

If you experience these conditions or symptoms, please share your concerns with your healthcare provider who can help assess whether this treatment is appropriate for you. You can buy ventolin inhaler at Meds for Less usually after a short consultation.

How to take Ventolin

Using your inhaler properly is very important. The technique can be difficult to get the hang of when you first start using however it’s important you are using your inhaler properly, otherwise very little medication may actually reach your lungs to help relieve your symptoms.

There are a few videos online that you can watch to learn good inhaler technique but broadly the steps are:

  • Before using the inhaler, shake it well to mix the medication.
  • Slowly exhale, clearing the air from your lungs and then bring the inhaler up to your mouth.
  • Press the inhaler down and and at the same time, inhale slowly taking the puff into your airways and lungs and hold for a few seconds.
  • Slowly exhale.
  • If you need another puff, you should wait 30 seconds – 1 minute and then repeat the same steps.
  • Wash your mouth once finished, as this can help to prevent infection.

How to use Ventolin during an asthma attack?

During an asthma attack, you can take up to ten puffs on your inhaler using the same technique as you normally do.

  • Sit upright and try not to panic.
  • Take one puff of the Ventolin inhaler every 30 seconds to one minute.
  • If your symptoms do not improve after ten puffs you should call an ambulance. Asthma attacks unrelieved by your inhaler can quickly become serious.
  • If your symptoms improve you should take follow up action with a GP or asthma nurse.

If it is a severe asthma attack, your doctor may have given you a nebuliser. The nebuliser gives the medication as a mist that you breathe in through a face mask.

How to use Ventolin with a spacer

As the Ventolin inhaler can be quite difficult to use, your healthcare provider may give you a spacer to help use the inhaler.

The spacer is a big container with a mouthpiece and a hole to attach the inhaler. A lot of younger children will use a spacer to help use the Ventolin inhaler more effectively.

If you feel you or your child would benefit from using a spacer, contact your healthcare provider. They can check the inhaler technique and provide a spacer if needed.

Aside from the spacer attachment, the technique to use the inhaler is generally the same:

  • Shake the inhaler and attach it the end of the spacer
  • Breathe out fully
  • Make a seal around the mouthpiece of the spacer
  • Inhale slowly and deeply into your lungs and press down on your inhalers at the same time.
  • Take the dose in and hold it for a few seconds.
  • Breathe out slowly
  • Wait for 30 seconds to one minute before another puff if you need it.

Why choose Ventolin for EIB?

EIB stands for Exercise-Induced-Bronchoconstriction. This refers to breathing problems including wheezing, feeling breathless, and coughing that are brought on by exercise.

Ventolin is good for this because it works very quickly and effectively to relax your airway muscles. You can use Ventolin before exercise to prevent symptoms of EIB so you can exercise more comfortably.

Ventolin inhalers are also easy to use and carry around, making them a good choice to treat EIB. The cost Ventolin inhaler will vary between pharmacies but on Medsforless one inhaler costs £9.95

Ventolin and other medications

Ventolin may interact with other medications so it is important to let the medical professional know what medication you are taking when you start taking Ventolin, including herbal remedies and over-the-counter drugs.

Ventolin has known interactions with some of these common medications below:

Beta-blockers e.g bisoprolol These are often used for heart problems

If used with Ventolin, you may feel chest tightness and shortness of breath.

Diuretics These are sometimes called “water pills”

If used with Ventolin, there is a risk that your electrolyte levels (particularly) potassium can be out of balance.

Tricyclic antidepressants If used with Ventolin, you may have an increased heart rate and blood pressure.
