Qvar Aerosol’s active ingredient (beclometasone dipropionate) belongs to a class of drugs known as corticosteroids, which are also known as steroids. Steroids have an anti-inflammatory effect, which means they reduce irritation and swelling in the airways, making breathing problems like asthma easier to manage.
When used on a daily basis, Qvar Aerosol can help prevent asthma attacks and control symptoms like wheezing and coughing at night. Within a few days, you should notice a difference. Qvar Aerosol does not provide immediate relief from asthma symptoms.
In the event of a sudden breathing problem, you should have a reliever inhaler on hand, such as Ventolin (salbutamol).
When using your inhaler, stand or sit up straight. Remove the mouthpiece cover and inspect the inside for cleanliness. Shake the inhaler 4-5 times before using.
Hold the inhaler upright with your thumb on the base and fingers on the top, forming a C shape with your hand. Exhale as far as you feel comfortable, then place the mouthpiece between your teeth in your mouth. Avoid biting it by closing your lips around it.
Inhale through your mouth, then press down on the top of the canister to release a puff of medicine just as you begin to inhale. Continue to inhale slowly and deeply. Take a deep breath and hold it for as long as you feel comfortable.
After 30 seconds, repeat the process to take another puff. After each use, replace the mouthpiece cover.
It can irritate the throat or cause thrush in the mouth.
Using a spacer device with your inhaler can help reduce the risk of these side effects. Brushing your teeth, gargling, and/or rinsing your mouth with water after each use can also help.
See the patient information leaflet for a complete list of side effects. If you have any concerns about side effects, please contact us through your Patient Record.
Qvar Aerosol should be safe to take with other medications. However, it’s critical that you tell us about any prescription, over-the-counter, or recreational medications you’re taking so that we can safely prescribe Qvar Aerosol.
We will not be able to prescribe Qvar Aerosol to you if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have ever needed intensive care treatment for your asthma, or if you have been admitted to the hospital because of your symptoms in the previous year.
