Propranolol belongs to the beta-blocker class of medications, impacting the heart, circulation, and various bodily functions. It is prescribed for a wide range of conditions, including hypertension (high blood pressure), angina pectoris (chest pain), and certain heart rhythm disorders (arrhythmias). Additionally, Propranolol is used to support heart function after a myocardial infarction (heart attack), prevent migraines, alleviate essential tremor, manage anxiety, and treat specific thyroid conditions such as thyrotoxicosis caused by an overactive thyroid gland. It also proves effective in treating hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (thickened heart muscle), phaeochromocytoma (a tumor near the kidney causing high blood pressure), and bleeding in the esophagus or stomach due to high blood pressure in the liver.

Do not use Propranolol tablets and notify your doctor if you are allergic to Propranolol or any of its ingredients. Additionally, avoid taking Propranolol if you have untreated or uncontrolled heart failure, are experiencing shock due to heart problems, have heart conduction or rhythm issues (such as second or third-degree heart block or sick sinus syndrome), have a slow heart rate, or suffer from low blood pressure. This medication should not be taken if you experience severe blood circulation problems (manifested by tingling, pale or blue fingers and toes), have diabetes mellitus (as Propranolol may mask low blood sugar levels), suffer from metabolic acidosis (increased acidity of the blood), are on a strict fasting diet, or experience chest pain at rest (Prinzmetal’s angina). Additionally, do not take Propranolol if you have asthma or any other respiratory difficulties, or if you have untreated phaeochromocytoma (high blood pressure caused by a tumor near the kidney). For full details refer to the Patient Information Leaflet.
Notify your doctor or pharmacist about any other medications you are currently using, have recently used, or may use, as Propranolol can interact with certain drugs and vice versa. Medications that may interact with Propranolol tablets include insulin (for diabetes), ergotamine, dihydroergotamine, or rizatriptan (for migraines), disopyramide, quinidine, amiodarone, and propafenone (for irregular heart rhythms), digitalis glycosides (digoxin) (for heart conditions), and various drugs used to treat heart diseases such as verapamil, diltiazem, nifedipine, and others in the dihydropyridine class. Additionally, Propranolol may interact with adrenaline (used in anaphylactic shock), lidocaine (for irregular heart rhythms or local anesthesia), cimetidine (for stomach ulcers), hydralazine (for high blood pressure), and clonidine (for hypertension or migraines). If taking clonidine alongside Propranolol, follow your doctor’s instructions carefully and avoid discontinuing clonidine without medical guidance. Other medications that can interact with Propranolol include ibuprofen and indometacin (for pain and inflammation), chlorpromazine and thioridazine (for psychiatric conditions), anesthetics, warfarin (to prevent blood clots), rifampicin (for infections), and theophylline (for asthma). It is important to disclose all medications to your healthcare provider to ensure safe and effective use of Propranolol. For full details refer to the Patient Information Leaflet.
