Frequently Asked Questions - FAQs

Propranolol is a medication used to treat a variety of conditions, including high blood pressure, heart rhythm disorders, and anxiety. It works by blocking the action of certain natural chemicals in the body, such as adrenaline, which can help to lower blood pressure and reduce symptoms of anxiety.  You can buy Propranolol at Meds for Less. It is available in 10mg and 40mg tablets [WPSM_AC id=5327]

What is Propranolol?

Propranolol hydrochloride is a beta blocker. Beta blockers are used to treat several heart problems such as high blood pressure, or conditions that can cause an arrhythmia.

Propranolol has also shown efficacy as a situational anxiety treatment, helping to alleviate some of the physical symptoms of anxiety such as sweating or heart palpitations.

Propranolol (sometimes sold under brands such as Inderal or Angilol) is a beta blocker.

Beta blockers are a class of medications, typically prescribed for heart conditions that work by slowing down the heart by blocking the function of hormones like adrenaline, helping to regulate heart rate and function.

How Does Propranolol Work For Anxiety?

Propranolol blocks the action of the hormone adrenaline. In the context of situational anxiety, this can slow heartbeat and help relieve the physical symptoms of anxiety such as sweating, trembling and palpitations.

However, Propranolol does not treat anxiety or address the root cause. Addressing the root cause of anxiety will require a treatment plan consisting of therapy, medication and many other factors. Propranolol hydrochloride simply helps to relieve physical manifestations of anxiety.

Propranolol is suitable for situational anxiety (a temporary bout of anxiety triggered by a specific event e.g. Anxiousness about a presentation at work) but is not suitable for generalised anxiety (anxiety that is persistent, excessive and occurs without a specific trigger.)

Uses for Propranolol

Propranolol tablets and other beta blockers are mostly used to treat heart problems. This may include:

  • Angina and chest pain
  • Heart failure

Propranolol Hydrochloride may be used to treat thyroid issues, situational anxiety and several other conditions. A full list of the conditions that Propranolol is licensed to treat can be found on the website for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence.

The dosage for Propranolol depends on the condition being treated. Propranolol is available in the following forms:

  • Propranolol 10mg tablets
  • Propranolol 40mg tablets
  • Propranolol 80mg tablets
  • Propranolol 160mg tablets

Propranolol is also available as an “SR” or “Sustained Release” tablet, which allows the medication to be dispersed through the body over a longer period. Propranolol hydrochloride may also be given intravenously in a secondary care setting.

No, Propranolol is a prescription only medication in the United Kingdom. A healthcare practitioner will prescribe Propranolol to individuals, where suitable. It cannot be bought over the counter in the United Kingdom.

Propranolol can be effective for managing the jittering, sweating and other physical symptoms seen during moments of anxiousness.

However, Propranolol does not address the psychological aspects of anxiety such as excessive fear or worry.

For this reason, propranolol can be useful for treating situational anxiety, but is less suitable for treating generalised anxiety.

It is not advisable to stop taking Propranolol ‘cold turkey’ as this may cause rebound effects such as an irregular heartbeat and chest pain. Stopping Propranolol should be done at the direction of and alongside a healthcare professional. Generally, dose will be tapered downwards over time.

Propranolol is a well-tolerated medication, when it is taken as directed and correct dosage. Exact dosage will be finalized by your prescribing clinician, however dosing will generally be in the following range:

  •       High blood pressure – One 80 – 160mg propranolol tablet, twice a day
  •       Angina Propranolol 40 – 120mg taken 2 or 3 times a day.
  •       Anxiety Propranolol 40 mg taken one or two times a day.

If taken at dosages or with medications that do not follow prescriber guidelines, Propranolol maybe less effective or dangerous.

If you take more than your prescribed dose of Propranolol and you have a slow heart rate, have breathing difficulties, begin to feel lightheaded or dizzy or you have a seizure or fit, you should immediately call 999 or visit A&E.

Beta-blockers such as Propranolol may cause fatigue or drowsiness in some people, particularly with the immediate release variation of the medication.

Beta-blockers can slow down your heart rate and reduce your body’s stress response thereby making some people feel sleepier.
