Omeprazole Capsules contain the active substance omeprazole. It belongs to a group of medicines called ‘proton pump inhibitors’. They work by reducing the amount of acid that your stomach produces. Omeprazole is commonly used to treat conditions such as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). This is where acid from the stomach escapes into the gullet causing pain, inflammation, and heartburn.

Omeprazole is used to treat various conditions in adults. These include ‘gastro-oesophageal reflux disease’ (GORD). It’s also effective for treating ulcers in the upper part of the intestine or stomach, as well as ulcers infected with the bacteria ‘Helicobacter pylori’. In such cases, antibiotics may accompany Omeprazole to combat the infection and promote ulcer healing. Additionally, it’s prescribed for ulcers caused by NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs), and as a preventive measure against NSAID-induced ulcers. Lastly, Omeprazole is used to manage excessive stomach acid resulting from a pancreatic growth, known as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. For full details refer to the Patient Information Leaflet.
Before taking Omeprazole, it’s crucial to have a discussion with your doctor or pharmacist. Serious skin reactions, such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS), and acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP), have been reported in association with Omeprazole treatment. If you notice any symptoms related to these serious skin reactions, described in section 4 of the Patient Information Leaflet discontinue Omeprazole use immediately and seek medical attention.
Omeprazole may mask the symptoms of other diseases. Therefore, if you experience any of the following before starting Omeprazole or while taking it, it’s essential to consult your doctor promptly: unexplained weight loss accompanied by swallowing difficulties, stomach pain or indigestion, vomiting food or blood, passing black stools (blood-stained faeces), severe or persistent diarrhoea (as Omeprazole has been linked to a slight increase in infectious diarrhoea), severe liver problems, prior skin reaction after treatment with a similar medicine that reduces stomach acid, or if you’re scheduled for a specific blood test (Chromogranin A). For full details refer to the Patient Information Leaflet.
If you are unable to take Omeprazole we have plenty of options at Medsforless including Pantoprazole
It’s crucial to follow your doctor’s guidance regarding Omeprazole usage. If you have any uncertainties, consult with them or your pharmacist. Your doctor will tailor the dosage and duration of treatment based on your specific condition and age. For adults, recommended doses vary depending on the condition being treated. For instance, to alleviate symptoms of GORD such as heartburn and acid regurgitation, the typical starting dose is 20 mg once daily for 4-8 weeks, with a potential increase to 40 mg if healing hasn’t occurred. Once healing is established, the dose may decrease to 10 mg once daily. For duodenal ulcers, the recommended dose is 20 mg once daily for 2 weeks, extendable if necessary, while for gastric ulcers, it’s 20 mg once daily for 4 weeks, potentially prolonged for another 4 weeks if needed. Prevention of ulcer recurrence typically involves 10 mg or 20 mg once daily, possibly increasing to 40 mg once daily. Always adhere to your doctor’s instructions regarding Omeprazole dosage and duration of treatment. For full details refer to the Patient Information Leaflet.
Although not everybody experiences them, it’s important to be aware of rare and very rare but serious side effects of Omeprazole. If you notice any of the following, which are rare (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people) or very rare (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people), cease Omeprazole use and seek medical attention immediately: sudden wheezing, swelling of your lips, tongue and throat or body, rash, fainting, or difficulties in swallowing (indicative of a severe allergic reaction); reddening of the skin with blisters or peeling, which may also involve severe blisters and bleeding in various parts of the body, potentially indicating ‘Stevens-Johnson syndrome’ or ‘toxic epidermal necrolysis’; a widespread rash, high body temperature, and enlarged lymph nodes (DRESS syndrome or drug hypersensitivity syndrome); a red, scaly widespread rash with bumps under the skin and blisters accompanied by fever, typically appearing at the onset of treatment (acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis); or yellow skin, dark urine, and tiredness, which could be symptoms of liver problems. Other side effects, though less serious, may include common effects like headaches, gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea, stomach pain, constipation, or flatulence, as well as nausea or vomiting, and the presence of benign polyps in the stomach. For full details refer to the Patient Information Leaflet.
