What is Nystan 30ml ?

Not only can a doctor prescribe a suitable treatment for you, such as Nystatin, but they can also assess the cause of your condition and advise steps on how to reduce your risk of developing oral thrush in the future.  Nystatin oral suspension is prescribed for the treatment of oral fungal infections. Additionally, systemic medications such as Fluconazole (Diflucan) and Canesten thrush Duo are also recognized for their efficiency in treating fungal infections throughout the body.

What causes oral thrush?

There are many risk factors that could cause someone to be more susceptible to oral thrush including:  i)Diabetes  ii) HIV  iii) Taking antibiotics  iv) Taking corticosteroids (such as preventer inhalers)  v) Wearing dentures  vi) Smoking  vii) Having a dry mouth from a medical condition or treatment Your doctor or dentist can diagnose oral thrush based on the visual symptoms, sometimes referred to as the clinical image. In some cases, a sample of the spores may be taken and examined under a microscope. Your doctor may recommend a blood test to determine if there may be an underlying medical condition that may put you at a higher risk of developing oral thrush.  Following our quick and simple medical questionnaire, our doctors can issue a prescription for Nystatin that our UK-registered pharmacy can fulfill. How does Nystatin work?

Nystatin works by weakening the cell walls of the fungus, allowing the contents of the cell to spill out, thus killing the cell and clearing the infection.  It does this by attaching to a compound called ergosterol, which the cells need to maintain their cell membrane. This causes the cell wall to become weak and lose its structural integrity.  While you may notice an improvement in your symptoms within a day or two of taking Nystatin, it is important to continue to take Nystatin for the full period prescribed by your doctor to eradicate your infection.  Similarly, to antibiotics, ceasing Nystatin treatment early can cause the infection to come back. Therefore, it is important to complete your course of antifungal medication as prescribed by a doctor.
