More Information

Hana mini pills contain 75Mcg Desogestrel, an artificial version of the hormone progesterone.

Desogestrel mimics the hormone Progesterone and prevents up to 99% of pregnancies in the following way:

  • Stopping your ovaries from releasing an egg.
  • Thickening the mucus in the cervix, making it harder for sperm to reach any egg that may have been released.
  • Thinning the lining of the womb, so if an egg were fertilised, it would have a hard time implanting and growing.

Progesterone naturally plays these roles in a women’s body, particularly during the menstrual cycle.

If you start taking in the early stage of your menstrual cycle (within the first 5 days after bleeding occurs), then Hana works immediately. You will not need to use any other forms of contraception to prevent pregnancy.

If you start taking Hana at any other time in your cycle, then you’ll need to give it at least 48 hours to start working. You should continue to use alternative forms of contraception during this period.

Hana Desogestrel comes in packs of 28 tablets. Each tablets is labelled with a day of the week. To take Hana you should:

  • Start with the correct day of the week as marked on the packaging.
  • Start a new pack after 28 days.
  • Take tablets whole, with water, at the same time each day.

If you’re late: If you are less than 12 hours late taking the pill, you should take it as soon as you remember (even if this means taking two pills on the same day.) If you vomit, you should treat this like a missed pill as the medication would not have properly been absorbed.

Hana pill contains the active ingredient Desogestrel. Common or very common side effects of Desogestrel include:

Breast abnormalities; depressed mood; headache; libido decreased; menstrual cycle irregularities; mood altered; nausea; skin reactions; weight increased.

Please note, if your periods stop when on Hana you should not be alarmed.

When taking any medication, you should keep your GP informed and allow your GP to complete Hana pill reviews, and amendments to your medication if needed.

Many progesterone only pills contain the same active ingredient (Desogestrel.) There are many alternative brands which contain the same ingredient and same dosage for example Cerelle and Cerazette.

Other progesterone only pills such as Noriday and Norgeston contain a different active ingredients and work slightly differently.

There are also combined oral contraceptives which contain the hormone oestrogen. Brands of combined alternative contraceptive pills include Microgynon and Lucette.
