About EMLA Cream

Because EMLA Cream is oil-based, it has the potential to weaken latex condoms and increase the likelihood of them splitting. As a result, it is even more critical to take appropriate precautions to avoid pregnancy or transmission of a sexually transmitted infection (STI). You might want to consider investing in polyurethane condoms, which are not affected by EMLA.

The active ingredients in EMLA cream are local anaesthetics prilocaine and lidocaine. This means that the cream lessens sensitivity in the area where it is applied. For some men, decreased sensitivity at the tip of the penis can cause ejaculation to be delayed.

There is evidence that EMLA cream is effective in up to 77 percent of cases. It was found to significantly increase the time between gaining an erection and ejaculating in these studies.

Effects of EMLA

When applied to the skin, EMLA cream can cause redness, slight swelling, tingling, or turn the skin pale. It may occasionally cause mild burning or itching. Please read the manufacturer’s product information leaflet that comes with your medicine for a complete list of side effects.

See the patient information leaflet for a complete list of side effects and how to use it correctly. If you are concerned about any side effects, please contact us through your Patient Record.

Men over the age of 18 can use our service to request EMLA. However, if you have a G6PD deficiency or certain blood disorders, you will be ineligible for this treatment (such as methaemoglobinaemia). If you have an open wound on your penis, you should avoid using EMLA because it can irritate it.

Drug interactions with EMLA cream

If you have been prescribed EMLA cream after a thorough consultation, you should be able to use it with other medications. When completing your consultation questionnaire, please let us know which prescription, over-the-counter, and recreational drugs you are taking so that we can safely prescribe EMLA.

Treatment options for PE

Counselling or hypnotherapy may be beneficial to some men in exploring and treating psychological causes of PE. Others successfully manage their PE by employing behavioral techniques.

We can also give you Priligy, which affects how your brain receives information. This can result in a delayed reaction in the areas of the brain responsible for ejaculation, allowing you to last longer during sex.
