Frequently Asked Questions - FAQs

Take 1 pill at the same time every day. Take the packs back-to-back, without a break, even if you’re on your period. Many women will not have their period while on Cerelle; this is normal and should not be a cause for concern.

Cerelle is a mini pill that only contains progestogens. Desogestrel, a synthetic version of the hormone progesterone, is its active ingredient. Cerelle is a medication that is prescribed to sexually active women who do not want to become pregnant. It is the generic version of Cerazette; it contains the same active ingredient and functions in the same manner.

If you begin using Cerelle on days 1-5 of your period, you will be protected against pregnancy right away.

Cerelle, when used correctly, can be up to 99 percent effective in preventing pregnancy. If you are vomiting or have severe diarrhea, you may not be protected from pregnancy. If this occurs, continue taking the pill as usual, but use a condom while you’re sick. If this continues for more than 24 hours, you should take the same steps as if the pill was missed.

Cerelle has no known side effects in the majority of women, but some have reported irregular bleeding, which usually resolves within 3 months. Other possible side effects include headaches, acne, nausea, mood swings, and breast sensitivity.

See the patient information leaflet for a complete list of side effects and how to use it correctly. If you are experiencing any side effects, please contact us through your Patient Record.

If you forget to take it, unlike most mini pills, Cerelle has a 12-hour window in which it can still protect you from pregnancy. As soon as you remember, take the forgotten pill. Then, as usual, take the next pill. This may imply taking two pills in a single day.

You will not be protected against pregnancy if you do not take it within 12 hours of the usual time. Continue to take your pills as usual, but for the next two days, use condoms. You may require emergency contraception if you had unprotected sex during this time.
