Frequently Asked Questions - FAQs

To avoid pregnancy, take one pill every day, at the same time every day, with no breaks. You take the packs back-to-back without stopping, even during your period. Many women will not have their period while on Cerazette; this is normal and should not be a cause for concern.

Cerazette is a mini pill that only contains progestogens. Desogestrel, a synthetic version of the hormone progesterone, is its active ingredient. Cerazette is a medication that is prescribed to sexually active women who do not want to become pregnant. Cerelle is the branded version; it contains the same active ingredient and works in the same way.

If you begin using Cerazette on days 1-5 of your period, you will be protected against pregnancy right away.

Cerazette, when used correctly, can be up to 99 percent effective in preventing pregnancy. If you are vomiting or have severe diarrhea, you may not be protected from pregnancy. If this occurs, continue taking the pill as usual, but use a condom while you’re sick. If this continues for more than 24 hours, you should take the same steps as if the pill was missed.

Cerelle is the generic name for Cerazette. They contain the same active ingredients and function in the same way. Cerelle may be a less expensive version of this mini-pill.

Most women will have no side effects from Cerazette, but some may experience irregular bleeding, which usually resolves within three months. Other possible side effects include headaches, acne, nausea, mood swings, and breast sensitivity.

See the patient information leaflet for a complete list of side effects and how to use it correctly. If you are experiencing any side effects, please contact us through your Patient Record.
