Sumatriptan, part of the triptan group (also known as 5-HT1 receptor agonists), is used to treat migraines. These headaches result from temporary widening of blood vessels in the head. Sumatriptan reduces this widening, relieving headaches and associated symptoms such as nausea, sensitivity to light, and sound.

When administering Sumatriptan, swallow the tablet with water, preferably as soon as possible after the onset of the migraine attack, without chewing or crushing it. If you perceive the effect of Sumatriptan to be too strong or insufficient, inform your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Do not take Sumatriptan if you are allergic to sumatriptan or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6 of the Patient Information Leaflet), if you have a heart problem such as narrowing of the arteries (Ischaemic heart disease) or chest pains (angina), or have already had a heart attack, if you have circulation problems in your legs that cause cramp-like pains when you walk (peripheral vascular disease), if you have had a stroke or a mini-stroke (also called a transient ischaemic attack or TIA), or if you have high blood pressure. You may be able to use Sumatriptan if your high blood pressure is mild and is being treated, or if you have serious liver disease. Do not take Sumatriptan with other migraine medicines, which contain ergotamine, or similar medicines such as methysergide or any triptan/5-HT1 receptor agonist (medicines which are also used for treating migraine), or with anti-depressants called MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors), or if you have taken these medicines in the last 2 weeks. If any of these apply to you, tell your doctor, and refrain from taking Sumatriptan.
If you are unable to take Sumatriptan visit our Migraine Products & Treatments Page for alternative options.
Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has instructed. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure. The recommended dose for adults is 50 mg of Sumatriptan during a migraine attack. Some patients may require a dose of 100 mg Sumatriptan. Sumatriptan is not recommended for children and adolescents under 18 years of age, or for elderly patients above 65 years of age. For patients with liver impairment, your doctor may prescribe a 50 mg dose of Sumatriptan.
Refrain from taking a second dose for the same attack if symptoms persist after the initial dose. Sumatriptan can be taken again. If your symptoms are initially relieved by the first dose but then return, you may take a second or third dose, ensuring at least a 2-hour interval between doses. It’s crucial not to exceed 300 mg of Sumatriptan within a 24-hour period, adhering strictly to the recommended dosage. In the event of overdosage, promptly seek medical assistance from your doctor or pharmacist, as side effects may manifest. If a dose of Sumatriptan is forgotten, do not compensate with a double dose. Instead, continue with the next scheduled dose as prescribed. For any queries regarding the usage of this medication, consult your doctor or pharmacist for guidance. For full details refer to the Patient Information Leaflet.
Like all medicines, this medication can cause side effects, although not everybody experiences them. Some symptoms may be attributed to the migraine itself. In case of an allergic reaction, seek immediate medical assistance. Signs of allergy include rash, hives (itchy rash), wheezing, swollen eyelids, face, or lips, and complete collapse. If any of these symptoms occur soon after using Sumatriptan, discontinue use and contact a doctor immediately.
Common side effects, which may affect up to 1 in 10 people, include heaviness, pressure, tightness, or pain in the chest, throat, or other body parts, as well as unusual sensations like numbness, tingling, warmth, or cold. These effects are usually transient but if they persist or worsen, especially chest pain, seek urgent medical assistance as they could indicate a heart attack. Other common side effects encompass nausea, vomiting, tiredness, drowsiness, dizziness, weakness, hot flushes, temporary increase in blood pressure, shortness of breath, and aching muscles. For full details refer to the Patient Information Leaflet.
