The active ingredient in Pulmicort Turbohaler (budesonide) belongs to a class of drugs known as corticosteroids, which are also known as steroids. Steroids have an anti-inflammatory effect, which means they reduce irritation and swelling in the airways, making breathing problems like asthma easier to manage.
Pulmicort Turbohaler, when used on a daily basis, can help prevent asthma attacks and control symptoms like wheezing or a nighttime cough. In a few days, you should notice a difference. Pulmicort Turbohaler does not provide immediate relief from asthma symptoms.
In the event of a sudden breathing problem, you should have a reliever inhaler on hand, such as Ventolin (salbutamol).
Remove the white cover by unscrewing it. Hold your Pulmicort Turbohaler with the brown base at the bottom upright. The inhaler should not be shaken.
To load a dose, turn the brown base in one direction as far as it will go, then turn it in the opposite direction until you hear a click.
Breathe out gently as far as is comfortable while holding your Pulmicort Turbohaler away from your mouth. To make a seal, place the mouthpiece between your teeth (do not bite it) and close your lips. Breathe in through your mouth as deeply and forcefully as you can.
Take the inhaler out of your mouth and gently exhale. If you’re taking another dose, repeat the process. Replace the cover and rinse your mouth after taking your prescribed dose.
It can irritate the throat or cause thrush in the mouth. Brushing your teeth, gargling, and/or rinsing your mouth with water after each use can all help.
See the patient information leaflet for a complete list of side effects. If you have any concerns about side effects, please contact us through your Patient Record.
Pulmicort Turbohaler should be safe to take with other medications. However, it’s critical that you tell us about any prescription, over-the-counter, or recreational medications you’re taking so that we can safely prescribe Pulmicort Turbohaler.
We will not be able to prescribe Pulmicort Turbohaler to you if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have ever needed intensive care treatment for your asthma, or if you have been admitted to the hospital because of your symptoms in the previous year.
