Symbicort Turbohaler is a reliever and a preventer in one. Formoterol fumarate dihydrate and budesonide are the two active ingredients.
Long-acting bronchodilator formoterol fumarate dihydrate Bronchodilators are medications that relax the muscles in the lungs and widen the airways, making breathing easier.
Budesonide belongs to a class of drugs known as corticosteroids, which are also known as steroids. Steroids have an anti-inflammatory effect, which means they reduce irritation and swelling in the airways, making breathing problems like asthma easier to manage.
The Symbicort Turbohaler should help with breathing control right away.
When used on a daily basis, Symbicort Turbohaler can help prevent asthma attacks and control symptoms like wheezing and coughing at night.
Some people use the Symbicort Turbohaler when they need extra doses for asthma relief, while others keep a reliever inhaler on hand, such as Ventolin (salbutamol), in case they have a sudden breathing problem.
Remove the white cover by unscrewing it. With the red grip at the bottom, hold your Symbicort Turbohaler upright. The inhaler should not be shaken.
To load a dose, turn the red grip in one direction as far as it will go, then turn it in the opposite direction until you hear a click.
Breathe out gently as far as is comfortable while holding your Symbicort Turbohaler away from your mouth. To make a seal, place the mouthpiece between your teeth (do not bite it) and close your lips. Breathe in through your mouth as deeply and forcefully as you can.
Take the inhaler out of your mouth and gently exhale. If you’re taking another dose, repeat the process. Replace the cover and rinse your mouth once you’ve finished taking your prescribed dose.
It can irritate the throat or cause thrush in the mouth. Using a spacer device with your inhaler can help reduce the risk of these side effects. Brushing your teeth, gargling, and/or rinsing your mouth with water after each use can also help.
When using Symbicort Turbohaler, some people report experiencing heart racing, tremors, or headaches.
See the patient information leaflet for a complete list of side effects. If you have any concerns about side effects, please contact us through your Patient Record.
Symbicort Turbohaler should be safe to take with other medications. However, it’s critical that you tell us about any prescription, over-the-counter, or recreational medications you’re taking so that we can safely prescribe Symbicort Turbohaler.
We will not be able to prescribe Symbicort Turbohaler to you if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have ever needed intensive care treatment for your asthma, or if you have been admitted to the hospital because of your symptoms in the previous year.
