Co-cyprindiol (commonly referred to as Dianette or Clairette) is a combined oral contraceptive pill that should be taken on the first day of your period. It is to be taken at the same time every day for 21 days, followed by a seven-day break. When taken in this manner, it will also serve as a form of contraception.
Azelaic Acid (generic Finacea) acne gel should be applied twice daily, preferably in the morning and evening. It should be used after cleansing the skin with a gentle cleanser.
Azelaic Acid gel reduces the amount of sebum (oil) produced by the skin, which results in fewer acne-causing bacteria and fewer blocked pores because sebum is their food source. Co-cyprindiol is a contraceptive pill that helps to block acne-causing hormones.
The combination of these two medications works to treat existing acne while also preventing new acne from forming.
Azelaic Acid gel is most effective for treating acne with papules (small red bumps) and pustules (white-tipped spots), as well as for those with sensitive skin. Co-cyprindiol is beneficial for women who suffer from hormonal acne because it inhibits the hormones that are most responsible for acne flare-ups.
If you want to see the effects of acne treatments, you must use both treatments optimally.
Co-cyprindiol, like many medications, can cause side effects in some people. Women may experience changes in mood, weight gain, headaches, and nausea. When using Azelaic Acid gel, some people may experience redness, dry skin, and irritation.
See the patient information leaflets for Co-cyprindiol and Azelaic Acid gel for more information on side effects and proper use.
Co-cyprindiol should not be used if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Azelaic Acid gel should not be used while pregnant or breastfeeding, but it can be used if it is not applied to the chest.
